I think I may have found the solution to the gigantic weed-infested bank that slopes away from my backyard. It is currently covered with weeds, vines, goldenrod and touch-me-nots. Every year I have promised myself that I would remove the weeds and plant something to cover the area. Every year, I have either run out of time or energy. Part of the reason I have conveniently put it off is because the slope is steep and gravely and I wasn't sure what to plant there.
These Improved Dragon's Blood Red Sedum (Sedum Spurium 'Fulda Glow') sound like the perfect match for my location as they reportedly thrive in poor, rocky soil and are winter-hardy to USDA plant hardiness zone 4. They require little care, no-to-minimal fertilizer and once established require no supplemental watering. Foliage is bronze-red and it produces abundant red, star-like blooms from early summer to fall. But that's not the best part about these attractive little plants. They are currently on sale for $3.89 for 12 plants, $7.69 for 24 plants and under $15 for 48 plants! That's a great deal.
Spacing them at the recommended distance of 12 inches, means I could reasonably cover a 7-foot by 12-foot area of the bank with creeping sedum this spring for under $15. I've already put it on my list and can't wait to see how they do. Of course, it does mean that I will need to be ready to remove the weeds in the spring, but with these beauties to look forward to, I'm sure I can muster up the energy, after all it will replace the eyesore with a blanket of color for years to come.
If you have a troublesome area in your backyard that needs some color, this is the perfect opportunity to beautify the area for a few dollars.
Until Next Time . . . HAPPY GARDENING!
