DIY Stream of Flowers

I love this variation on the spilled bucket or wheelbarrow of flowers. The tiny impatiens flow from the bucket creating a stream of color. This project is simple enough to accomplish, but it will take tons of impatiens to get the job done. 


You don't need to use impatiens, of course, but their mounding growth habit and ability to thrive in low light make them ideal for brightening a shady nook. For a sunny location, try cascading petunias instead.


How it's done

• Lay a half barrel or large bucket on it side.
• Fill it halfway with potting mix.
• Plant several seedlings inside the barrel or bucket so that they will trail out of the bucket.
• Create a pathway leading away from the bucket.
• Use a garden hose or rope to create the desired curves to your stream.
• Prepare the soil, using the outline of the garden hose as your guide.
• Plant seedlings following their recommended spacing. Impatiens can be planted 8 to 12 inches apart, while large trailing petunias require 15 to 20 inches between plants.

White or multicolored alyssum or blue lobelia would also make an attractive stream of color. They both thrive in full to partial sun and are easy to care for.
